Let's talk about healthy habits for 2017 and how to keep them. In the U.S. and other countries, many people make what are called "New Year's resolutions". A New Year's resolution is a decision to make major changes in one's personal or professional life, like eating healthier, exercising more, quitting smoking, etc. A huge number of people who start a resolution do not finish it. This article in The Guardian has the numbers for the U.K.

In the U.S., practicing mindfulness is a very popular method to increase happiness. An article in the New York Times challenges readers to use mindfulness to decrease negative thinking in 2017. The article says that people tend to focus on negative things that happened recently, which can increase stress and be damaging to health. Psychologists recommend making lists of things you have accomplished or talking to family and friends to lessen negative thoughts. Learning to accept negative thoughts and then moving on to action is also important, according to the article.

It is now known that having a healthy gut is one of the most important ways to have a healthy body and mind. The type of bacteria and other microbes in your gut influences your immune system, allergies, diabetes, obesity, and mental health. We wrote an article about the effect of food on the mind back in October. Just by changing what you eat you can change the community of bacteria in your gut and your health.

You have a goal for this year (or many) and you want to stay with it all year. How do you do it? Breaking your goal into smaller goals that you can do every week and every day makes it a lot easier. Also, working on a smaller goal that you can definitely achieve is better than having a HUGE goal that is unlikely to succeed.
